Goosen two clear in Germany

Golf Betting Lines

06/25/2009 - Munich, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Retief Goosen fired an eight-under 64 in sloppy conditions Thursday to grab a two-stroke lead after the first round of the BMW International Open.

Goosen, a two-time U.S. Open champion, is coming off a 16th place at that championship last weekend. He won earlier this year on the PGA Tour, but is looking for his first European Tour title since winning the 2007 Qatar Masters.

Heavy rain nearly forced a delay at the start of the round, but play got underway as scheduled despite puddles in the fairways and water-logged bunkers.

Richard Finch is alone in second place at minus-six. Niclas Fasth leads a group of nine players tied for third place at five-under 67.

Goosen closed his opening round with a flourish to take the lead. He had a steady front nine with four birdies, two of which came on the par-fives, Nos. 6 and 9 at Golfclub Munchen Nord-Eichenried.

"I didn't make birdies [on four or five], but the par-five sixth, I had a good birdie there," Goosen said. "On nine, I holed a ten-footer for birdie. The front nine was good."

The South African converted a birdie chance on the par-four 13th to move to minus-five and within one of Finch's lead.

After a pair of pars, Goosen birdied the 16th to gain a share of the lead. He followed with a nine-foot birdie on the par-three 17th to move ahead of Finch. Goosen then scrambled for a birdie on the par-five 18th to lead by two after one round.

"The 16th is always a chance for birdie...I hit a five-wood off the tee and had about 80 yards left and hit it to about 12 feet behind the hole and made a good putt there," Goosen explained. "At the 17th, I hit a seven-iron similar sort of distance, 12, 15 feet.

"The 18th was a good drive and I completely splashed my second right into the TV towers and stuff on the right. It could easily have gone in the water and ended up being a six and been disappointing."

Finch played the back nine first, but did most of his damage on the front nine. He carded two birdies and a bogey over his first nine holes.

Around the turn, Finch birdied the first and fourth to move to minus-three. After stumbling to a bogey on the fifth, the Englishman drained a 22-foot eagle putt on the sixth and followed with a 35-footer birdie for on seven.

That gave him a share of the lead at minus-five, but Finch moved one clear of that group as he birdied the ninth, his last, from 18 feet out.

"It went real well and it was nice to finish with a birdie on nine, my last hole," Finch said. "I feel like I've been playing okay, but it's not quite been happening, so it's nice to get off to a good start this week."

Fasth shares third place with Phillip Price, Andrew Coltart, Maarten Lafeber, David Lynn, James Kingston, Marcus Fraser, Gregory Bourdy and Danny Willett.

Bernhard Langer, Henrik Stenson and Paul McGinley are among 11 players tied for 12th place at four-under 68. Defending champion Martin Kaymer is tied for 63rd at minus-one.
